REVIEWS
  • Ruckomechi Camp, situated on the western boundary of Mana Pools National Park, accommodates guests in ten spacious en-suite tented units, including a family unit, all of which overlook the wide Zambezi River. The camp is set amongst broad-canopied ana trees, much loved by the elephants for their rich nutritious seeds. Each tent has both indoor and outdoor showers, and the camp boasts a favourite amongst guests: its outdoor ‘bath-with-a-view’ in a secluded, scenic spot. The central dining, bar, library and lounge areas face the majestic, evocative escarpment across the river in Zambia, and are connected to the rest of the camp by low-level walkways. There is a separate deck with a pool and hammocks for swimming and sunbathing, and an inviting, cushion-strewn star gazing deck. Wildlife viewing takes place in open 4x4 vehicles, on motorised pontoon boats or on canoes, on foot and in hides.
  • Here are a few special highlights found in Mana Pools that we've picked out :-

    • Zimbabwe’s second United Nations Natural World Heritage site after Victoria Falls
    • Mana Poosl is like a ‘garden of eden’ because of its location along the Zambezi river, its proliferate wildlife and amazing vistas
    • If you are lucky you may see elephants stand up on their hind legs reaching their trunks upwards to find nutritious seeds and pods in the trees
    • The view across the river to the Zambian escarpment is one you will never tire of
    • Inland springs and ancient ox-bow lakes formed on the flood plains are havens for all manner of wildlife
  • ROOMS

    • Ten large tented chalets are all situated on the riverfront
    • Two of the chalets are honeymoon suites while another forms a family chalet – which has an extra bedroom and toilet
    • Ruckomechi’s large, open-plan en-suite bathrooms have ‘wet-room’ style walk-in showers and copper washbasins in the shape of a mokoro (a local canoe)
    • Each chalet has a canvas ceiling and walls, and insect-mesh windows which allow a breeze through
    • The camp sleeps 20 guests in 10 thatched chalets
    • Ten twin, luxury rooms under thatch with ensuite facilities
    • The honeymoon suite overlooks the Zambezi River and has an outdoor bath
    • There are 9 - ¾ twin-bedded rooms which can be converted into king-sized beds
    • 1 Family unit for 4 guests
    • Tour leader accommodation for two in thatched chalet with en-suite facilities at the back of the camp
    • The beds are covered in crisp white linen and are dominated by rustic, locally made wooden-pole headboards, reflecting the camp’s use of local materials
    • Each chalet also has a writing table, a very comfortable leather chair, a free-standing fan, and bedside lamps using low-energy LED light bulbs
    • Between the bedroom and the bathroom is a large dividing wall constructed from steel-mesh cages filled with river-pebbles and rocks
    • Storage space for luggage, a small wardrobe and some shelves
    • Two sides of each bathroom have big mesh windows, with views of the wide Zambezi River to the front
    • There’s an outdoor shower (hot and cold), too, while the honeymoon suites also have outside baths
    • Each chalet with a wooden veranda with a couple of comfortable fold-up chairs
    • Each chalet has smooth concrete floors inlaid with decorative river-pebbles

    • One long side of each chalet has views of the surrounding bush and river, and to the side is the chalet’s own solar-power unit, which provides electricity and heats the water

    • Dining room
    • Library, bar and a relaxed lounge
    • A focal point of this main area is a wooden platform, which juts out over the river from the deck in front of camp – reminiscent of a tiny pier. This has a circle of comfortable chairs, and is a great place to watch the sun set, or indulge in after-dinner star-gazing
    • Infinity pool, surrounded by sun loungers and a couple of hammocks.

    ACCESS

Normally accessed by air transfer into Mana West airstrip and then by game drive vehicle to the camp, which is located on the edge of the Zambezi river.
