Classic Lodge | Matobo Hills
Big Cave Camp reposes atop an enormous granite whaleback, commanding inspirational views across the famous Matobo National Park. Matobo National Park is located south of Zimbabwe's second largest city, Bulawayo. The design of the lodges is A-frame granite thatch, which ensures they are cool in summer and warm in winter. There are 7 thatched A-Frame Cottages. The eight lodges, each with en-suite bathroom and private balcony, resonate African creative flair. Included is a honeymoon suite, as well as family rooms for those with small children. The chalets can sleep up to a total of 21 guests. The bar and dining area features a huge rock enclosed in the room, with trees growing through the roof creating a natural atmosphere. The main communal area at Big Cave Camp has a natural rock pool and sundeck, which provides an idyllic spot to relax after a day spent exploring the rock art and wildlife of the national park.
Here are a few special highlights found in Matobo Hills that we've picked out :-
The Big Cave campsite is situated only 3 km off the main tarmac road, and is located in picturesque Miombo woodland, and is easily accessible. It can be accessed by road transfer or self drive in own vehicle.
For self-drive guests follow Robert Mugabe Street / Kezi Road out of Bulawayo (South West). After approx. 30km pass the turn-off to Rhodes Matobo National Park. Do not turn – continue straight along the Matobo Road until you reach the 46km mark.Turn left at the Big Cave Camp sign and proceed along the gravel road for approx. 2km until you reach the parking lot where you will be collected by a 4x4 vehicle and taken to the lodge. Alternatively if you have entered Zim from the Plumtree side, then you will need to look out for the La Concorde road, which is a dirt road that links the Plumtree road to the Matobo / Kezi road. This road is situated just before Figtree on your right, and just before the toll gate. If you hit the toll gate you have gone too far! The road is reasonable if driven slowly, and is approximately.
