In a more cultural sense, the Nyami Nyami River God is a major force in the population around the Zambezi Valley. The Nyami Nyami is believed to be a dragon-like amphibious god of the valley with the head of a fish, the torso of a snake, and the supernatural power to protect the local Tonga people and give them sustenance during difficult times.
Legend has it that the river god lived upstream with his wife, but when the dam wall was constructed it separated the two. In fury, folklore suggests that he forced his way back upstream and was responsible for the collapse of part of the dam wall that killed many workmen during the dam’s construction. While now it can be found portrayed in pendants and jewellery sold in the Kariba town, the Nyami Nyami is still one of the most important gods of the Tonga people.
